IMAGE DESCRIBE

Role and Collaboration:

Designer on the project, working closely with the design team lead, product manager, engineers, learning curriculum designer, and in-house design studio reviewers.

Problem Statement:

CEFR A2+ learners need more chances to create their own sentences and practice recalling, not just recognize or translate ones they are given.

Past explorations:

An open-ended “Describe the Image” exercise had been proposed twice before but never launched. First, there was no scalable way to create enough images. Second, the typing-first approach created too much friction.

Third time’s the charm:

Improved AI image generation solves the content-creation blocker. Live transcription, which already exists in another speaking exercise, makes a speaking-first version possible.

With these tools now available, our team proposed the idea again. I updated the design to make speaking the default, while still offering typing as an option for learners who want an extra challenge.

Current state:

The project was approved for development and is currently being tested in the French course. So far, it has driven a +140K increase in time spent recalling.
