OPTIMIZE, OPTIMIZE, OPTIMIZE

Role and Collaboration:

Sole designer on the projects, working closely with a product manager, engineers, and learning curriculum designers.

Why Optimization matters:

The work does not end at launch. There is always an opportunity to reduce friction, refine an interaction, and identify new ways to improve the experience for learners. Optimization means closely evaluating what already exists, using insights to guide iteration, and continuously improving the product over time.

Feature: Hanzi (chinese alphabet) node in the Chinese Course.

Area of improvement: UXR showed some learners found Hanzi practice repetitive and frustrating.

Optimization: Make it optional for learners who simply want to practice words and are not interested in learning Chinese characters.

Result: Quit rate decreased and Daily Active Users (DAUs) increased.

Feature: Stories open-ended writing.

Area of improvement: When learners are marked incorrect, they do not receive feedback.

Optimization: Added a sample answer to show learners what an acceptable response looks like.

Result: Immediate feedback helped learners understand mistakes while the exercise was still fresh, making it easier to stay motivated and return to the app to keep learning.

Feature: Videocall.

Area of improvement: When Video Call launched in Japanese, it did not include transliteration (Japanese words in the Latin alphabet) settings, making it difficult for beginners to use.

Optimization: Replaced the exit button with transliteration settings that learners can turn on at any time, and moved exit into the settings bottom sheet.

Result: Quit rate decreased, and Video Call start rate in the Japanese course increased.
